Why Experience Still Matters in the Age of AI

If you’ve ever learned web development, chances are the first thing you ever typed was:

Hello, World.

Seeing those words appear in your browser feels like magic. It’s a small accomplishment, but one that makes you believe you’re on your way to building amazing things.

The truth?

That little message doesn’t prepare you for what’s coming next.

In many ways, “Hello, World” is bigger than programming.

It is something every one of us experiences.

From the moment we are born, we are introduced to the world without fully understanding what lies ahead. No one can completely prepare us for the challenges, disappointments, opportunities, relationships, mistakes, and lessons waiting for us.

We enter the world knowing almost nothing, and then we learn by living.

Web development is not much different.

You type two simple words, see them appear on the screen, and feel like you have arrived.

Then the real journey begins.

I started building websites back in 2016.

At the time, I was a young entrepreneur buying and selling products to friends and family. Eventually, I decided it was time to invest in a website.

I hired a developer who seemed passionate and confident. We had a discovery meeting, talked through the vision, and I left excited about what was coming.

When the project was delivered, it simply wasn’t what I had imagined.

The relationship didn’t end well.

So I found another developer who introduced me to OpenCart. The result was better, but I still wasn’t satisfied.

Being “good enough” has never really been enough for me.

I knew there was more potential than what I was seeing.

So I started teaching myself.

That decision changed everything.

What began as trying to improve my own website slowly turned into learning HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, servers, databases, website performance, security, SEO, user experience, and eventually business systems.

I made mistakes.

I broke things.

I rebuilt them.

I learned that creating a website is one thing. Creating a website that performs, converts visitors into customers, stays secure, and continues to grow with a business is something entirely different.

Years later, our e-commerce website became one of the top-performing online stores in Kenya.

The full story is much longer, but that’s where this journey really began.

Today, we’re living through another major shift.

Artificial intelligence can generate websites in minutes.

Honestly, I think that’s incredible.

I use AI every single day.

It has become one of the most valuable tools in my workflow.

What concerns me isn’t AI itself.

It’s the belief that generating a website is the same as building one.

A beautiful homepage is only a small piece of the puzzle.

Can the website load quickly?

Is it secure?

Does it work properly on every device?

Can search engines understand it?

Will it still perform when traffic grows?

Can it capture leads reliably?

Can it integrate with the systems the business depends on?

Can someone troubleshoot it when something inevitably goes wrong?

Those are questions AI alone doesn’t answer.

They’re questions that come from experience.

One of the biggest skills a developer builds isn’t writing code.

It’s learning how to think.

When something breaks, you don’t just search for an answer.

You investigate.

You inspect the code.

You trace the issue.

You understand why it happened before deciding how to fix it.

That’s a skill developed over years of solving real problems.

AI has made me faster.

It helps me brainstorm ideas, automate repetitive work, generate code, research unfamiliar technologies, and sometimes even point me toward a solution I hadn’t considered.

But I never copy and paste code without understanding it.

I review it.

I test it.

I improve it.

Sometimes AI gives me exactly what I need.

Other times, it gives me something that’s close enough for me to know where to take it from there.

That’s the difference experience makes.

The value isn’t in asking AI the right prompt.

The value is knowing whether the answer is actually right.

I don’t believe AI is replacing web developers.

I believe it’s changing what makes a great developer.

The repetitive work is becoming easier.

The strategic thinking is becoming more valuable.

The developers who embrace AI will move faster.

The developers who combine AI with experience will build better solutions.

At Zeptonic, that’s how we approach technology.

We don’t build websites simply because they look modern.

We build digital solutions that help businesses operate more efficiently, communicate more effectively, and create better experiences for their customers.

Sometimes that means a new website.

Sometimes it means automating repetitive tasks.

Sometimes it means connecting systems that were never designed to work together.

The technology is simply the tool.

The outcome is what matters.

Looking back, I’m grateful that my first experience with web development wasn’t perfect.

If that first website had exceeded every expectation, I might never have learned how to build one myself.

Sometimes disappointment becomes the starting point for something much bigger.

AI is one of the greatest tools our industry has ever received.

It isn’t replacing curiosity.

It isn’t replacing experience.

And it certainly isn’t replacing the responsibility that comes with building solutions businesses depend on every day.

AI helps us get there faster.

Experience is what gets us there correctly.

Whether we are entering the world for the first time or entering an unfamiliar industry, no one can fully prepare us for everything ahead.

We learn.

We adapt.

We fail.

We improve.

And just like every developer who has ever started this journey, it all begins with two simple words:

Hello, World.

Until next week,
